Iran secures quarterfinals spot by defeating Vietnam in AFC U20 Asian Cup

(MENAFN) Iran's U20 national football team defeated Vietnam 3-1 at the Istiqlol Stadium in Fergana, Uzbekistan, on Tuesday. The victory secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the AFC U20 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2023, as they finished second in Group B. Australia topped the group with a 9-1 win over Qatar.

Iran bounced back from their Matchday Two defeat to Australia, needing a win to stay in contention. They threatened Vietnam from the beginning, with Mersad Seifi's shot blocked from close range and forcing Vietnam goalkeeper Cao Van Binh to intervene from the resulting corner. Iran's captain Mohammad Amin Hazbavi scored the first goal of the match with a header in the 36th minute, but Khuat Van Khang leveled the score in the 56th minute.

Saeid Saharkhizan scored Iran's second goal in the 75th minute, and substitute Mohammad Hosseinnejhad scored the third goal in the dying moments of the match. The victory completed a remarkable turnaround for Iran, who secured their place in the knockout stage despite their previous defeat to Australia.

For Vietnam, the loss meant they exited the tournament despite having registered victories over Australia and Qatar. Iran will now face the Group A winners in the quarterfinals on March 11.
