US, allies consider sanctions on china for alleged support of Russia in Ukraine conflict

(MENAFN) According to a report by Reuters, the United States is coordinating with its allies, particularly the G7 nations, to impose new economic sanctions on China in case it chooses to support Russia's military operations in Ukraine. Although Beijing has denied the allegations, the United States has repeatedly warned China against supplying weapons to Russia for the Ukrainian campaign. The unnamed US officials stated that the discussions are "laying the groundwork for potential action" and did not provide further details about the potential sanctions.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has also echoed the concerns regarding China's possible involvement, stating that there have been signs that China is planning to provide support to Russia. However, he did not provide any evidence to support these claims.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that the United States will not hesitate to impose sanctions on Chinese firms in the event that Beijing provides lethal aid to Moscow. Blinken has warned that such a move would have "implications and consequences" and discussed the issue with top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi during their meeting at the Munich Security Conference last month.

Despite these warnings, China has recently unveiled a plan seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine and has rejected any claims of intending to provide lethal aid to Russia. The situation remains tense, and the United States is taking precautions to ensure that China's possible support for Russia does not exacerbate the conflict further.
