Taliban forces kill Daesh commander accused of planning attacks on diplomatic missions in Kabul

(MENAFN) Taliban forces killed a top commander of Daesh, Qari Fateh, who allegedly planned attacks on diplomatic missions and other targets in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul. According to a statement by Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, Fateh was the regional “intelligence and operations chief” for Daesh and was directly responsible for recent operations in Kabul. One other Daesh member was killed in the operation, which took place on Sunday night in Kabul's Khair Khana area. Residents reported hearing loud gunfire that night, and footage of two bodies lying in debris was later posted on Twitter by Taliban officials.

Although violence in Afghanistan decreased after the Taliban took power in August 2021, security has recently worsened, with a series of mass casualty attacks attributed to Daesh’s regional chapter. In fact, a United Nations Security Council report published in July 2022 described Fateh as a key Daesh leader, in charge of military operations spanning India, Iran, and Central Asia. Daesh has become the primary security threat to the Taliban's rule, carrying out attacks on foreigners, religious minorities, and government institutions. Both groups share an austere Sunni Islamist ideology, but Daesh seeks to establish a global "caliphate," while the Taliban's goal is to govern an independent Afghanistan.

The killing of Fateh is a significant victory for the Taliban, as he was responsible for planning and executing attacks against diplomatic missions in Kabul. Although the Taliban have stated that they will not allow Afghan soil to be used to launch attacks on other countries, their control over Afghanistan is tenuous, and Daesh could continue to operate in the country. The Taliban's ability to maintain stability and prevent attacks by Daesh and other militant groups will be crucial in determining whether they can govern effectively and gain international recognition.
