(MENAFN) Retired Detective Marc Liberatore, in a wintery night near Rochester, New York, shares with "48 Hours" how he helped solve one of the most infamous cold cases in America. The case dates back to Feb. 19, 1982, when police officers arrived at the Brighton home of Jim and Cathy Krauseneck and discovered a gruesome scene. Cathy Krauseneck, a 29-year-old mother, was found dead in bed with an ax lodged in her head.
According to Det. Mark Liberatore, Cathy's death resulted from a single blow to the head, which caused instant death, as per the medical examiner's report. When Jim Krauseneck returned home from work, he found his wife's lifeless body in their home. Their 3-and-a-half-year-old daughter Sara was unharmed and present in the house. Soon after discovering his wife's body, Jim took Sara and went to their neighbor's house.
Jim appeared traumatized and could barely speak when he arrived at the neighbor's house. The neighbor called 911 after Jim informed her about his wife's death. Brighton Police Lieutenant Bill Flood arrived to take Krauseneck's statement. Meanwhile, dispatch sent first responders to the scene immediately.
The investigation into Cathy's murder became a cold case that remained unsolved for decades. However, with the advancement in forensic technology and the persistent efforts of investigators, justice prevailed. Detective Marc Liberatore and his team's relentless efforts ultimately led to the arrest and conviction of Jim Krauseneck in 2019, almost four decades after Cathy's murder.
