Workshop promotes healthy school canteen nutrition in Qatar


(MENAFN) Ministry of Education and Higher Education ensures the provision of healthy foods in government schools by implementing regulations and specifications set by the School Canteens Committee. The committee aims to provide high-quality, healthy food at reasonable prices to students. Muhammad Abdullah Al Maraghi, Director of Health and Safety Department and Chairman of the School Canteens Committee at the Ministry, emphasizes the importance of school canteen supervisors in ensuring the safety of all.

To further promote healthy nutrition and food safety in government school canteens, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, in cooperation with the School Canteens Committee, organized a workshop. Nearly 200 supervisors of public school canteens were targeted, and the workshop covered topics such as the importance of breakfast and health problems resulting from not eating it.

Hind Ali Al Tamimi, a Senior Nutritionist from the Ministry of Public Health, presented on the benefits of healthy nutrition and provided nutritional guidelines for Qatar. She stressed the importance of eating a variety of healthy foods, reducing the intake of food high in sugar, salt, and fat, and drinking sufficient amounts of water to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

In another presentation, Wafa Khamis Shabeel, a Senior Food Safety Specialist at the Ministry of Public Health, discussed health requirements in the school canteen. This included topics such as infrastructure and external environment, dining hall safety, building properties, equipment, supplies, food handlers, cleaning, disinfection, and pest control. The presentation also highlighted the role of school canteen supervisors, the mechanism for receiving and storing food, and the method of collecting retained samples, complaints, and suspicions of food poisoning.

The workshop's aim is to promote health awareness and encourage a healthy culture within the school community. The efforts of the School Canteens Committee and the Health and Safety Department at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education reflect their commitment to ensuring the provision of healthy foods in government schools.
