US lawmakers seek official conclusion to Gulf, Iraq wars

(MENAFN) A group of US Congressmen from both parties submitted a plan on Thursday that would "officially terminate the Gulf and Iraq wars" and improve relations between Washington and Baghdad.

The step would involve the reintroduction of legislation that would repeal the AUMF, which was approved by Congress in 1991 and 2002.

Democratic Senator Tim Kaine declared, "The 1991 and 2002 AUMFs are no longer required, have no operational function, and carry the danger of possible abuse."

Congress must approve our measure removing these antiquated AUMFs and officially putting an end to the Gulf and Iraq wars out of respect for our service personnel, veterans, and their families.

The conflicts caused tens of thousands of fatalities, widespread emigration, civil war, and disruption in local governance.

Even though the US withdrew its soldiers from Iraq in 2011, it still maintains diplomatic and military ties with the nation. Similar relationships exist throughout the Gulf as well.

Republican Senator Todd Young stated that Congress "must do its job and take seriously the choice to not simply commit America to war, but to actively proclaim that we are no longer at war."
