Iran FM discuss with UN head, receives congratulatory memos


(MENAFN) Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres held a meeting and discussed various regional and international developments including the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, as well as the status of the sanctions removal talks. Amir Abdollahian welcomed the UN chief's initiative to hold regional dialogues and praised Iran's balanced foreign policy. He emphasized the need for increased international aid for those affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria and pointed out that people in Idlib, Syria are facing a catastrophic situation. The Iranian foreign minister also highlighted Iran's readiness to send relief teams to Idlib.

During the meeting, Amir Abdollahian talked about the sanctions removal talks and the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He stated that the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran and the IAEA have established a framework for cooperation and that a visit by the IAEA chief to Tehran is in the works.

On the other hand, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres congratulated Iran on its National Day and described the continuation of regional cooperation as important. He highlighted the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria and stated that the UN will do its utmost to help the affected people, including in Syria, which he described as a completely humanitarian issue. Guterres also mentioned the sanctions removal talks and expressed his support for the diplomatic path and negotiations until a final agreement is reached. The two leaders held consultations on the status of the sanctions lifting talks and other matters of mutual interest.
