(MENAFN- Khaama Press) The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has announced that Afghanistan needs immediate humanitarian aid, amid the dire economic situation.
UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Omar Abdi's on Monday said that Afghanistan is experiencing the worst period in the past two decades.
Mr. Abdi said on Twitter that humanitarian needs are felt now more than ever before in Afghanistan, and has warned that disruptions of aid will lead to a humanitarian catastrophe in the war-torn country, already plagued with critical challenges of different kinds.
“Some 28 million Afghans are in dire need of humanitarian aid, which needs the immediate attention of the international community, partners, and Taliban's caretaker government,” Abdi said.
During his visit with Afghanistan's Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore reiterated that the organization is committed to continuing its much-needed operations in the areas of education, healthcare, and children's vaccination in Afghanistan.
Prior to this, UNICEF had announced that Afghanistan is among the eight most hunger-hit countries in the world.
Meanwhile, the restrictions on women by Afghanistan's de facto authorities continue to increase, including restrictions on women's movement and access to public spaces, including parks, which is having a detrimental impact on women's and children's safety and well-being throughout the country.
The implementation of gender-based restrictions and the harsh winter have further complicated the situation for international aid organizations and aid groups to deliver lifesaving services to vulnerable families across Afghanistan.
Some aid organizations have even set the return of women employees to work as a precondition to the resumption of their operations, while others have already closed doors.
