Closing of Famous tourist destination because of severe disturbance

(MENAFN) In light of the continuing anti-government violence roiling the nation, Machu Picchu has been declared "indefinitely" closed to tourists by Peru. The nation’s culture Minister made the announcement on Saturday.

“The closure of the Inca trails network and the Machu Picchu citadel has been ordered due to the social situation and to preserve the safety of visitors,” the statement from the ministry. All visitors who purchased tickets to visit the locations are entitled for a refund while the locations are closed until further notice.

Reports of damage to the railway leading to the 15th-century citadel that was reportedly caused by anti-government demonstrators preceded the closing of Machu Picchu. According to the nation's tourism agency, this led to the stranding of more than 400 people at the location.

By late Saturday, all of the visitors, including 148 foreigners and 270 Peruvians, had been transported to Cusco, according to Tourism Minister Luis Fernando Helguero.

Since early December last year, when President Pedro Castillo was removed from office and detained on corruption charges, the South American nation has been engulfed in conflict.
