Famous venue is advised to stop using facial recognition technology

(MENAFN) State lawmakers have warned the Madison Square Garden stadium in New York City not to use face recognition technology as a weapon against visitors if they don't want to lose their lucrative USD43 million tax break. They urged MSG Entertainment, the venue's owner, to "immediately stop the use of this inappropriate technology on fans" in a letter that was released last week.

According to the letter, “MSG Entertainment is using facial recognition systems to automate discrimination, violate individuals’ privacy, and chill any criticism of the company.” Noting that “it sets a dangerous precedent to permit MSG Entertainment to maintain such power.”

They refrained from calling for a complete ban on face recognition, leaving room for safety-related applications of the technology. MSG, which manages Radio City Music Hall as well, must pledge to remove customer data as soon as it is no longer required.

If MSG does not comply, it runs the danger of losing several liquor licenses in addition to the USD43 million tax abatement and a unique municipal permit that allows Madison Square Garden to hold more guests than the standard 2,500 capacity.
