UAE will outlaw single-use plastic shopping bags next year
(MENAFN) According to AP, the United Arab Emirates has announced a ban on single-use plastic shopping bags that would go into effect in 2019. This is the latest move to reduce pollution in the oil-rich country.
In line with a statement made by the government-run WAM news agency, the law is going to ban the import, manufacture, and distribution of such bags starting on January 1, 2024. From January 1, 2026, plastic cups, plates, and utensils will also be prohibited.
The United Arab Emirates, a significant oil producer and the country hosting the United Nation climate summit the current year, has stated its intention to become carbon neutral by 2050.
One of the most troublesome rubbish items is plastic bags, which kill birds and marine life and pollute streets and rivers. Microscopic plastic particles have been discovered within the bodies of fish, birds, and other species. Plastic takes decades to decompose.
