(MENAFN) Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has set January 12 for holding a meeting to select a new president.
A declaration by Berri’s office read the meeting will take place at 11:00 AM local time.
Politicians had held 10 meetings but could not select a new leader to succeed Michel Aoun, who stepped down on Oct. 31.
Parliamentary blocs, as well as the Lebanese Forces Party, blame politicians allied with the Hezbollah group and its allies of hindering the election of a new leader by forming blank ballots.
Hezbollah, for its part, refuses the allegation, stating it looks for a president who "will not stab the resistance in the back," in reference to Hezbollah itself.
Since 2019, Lebanon has been struggling with a crippling financial crisis that, in line with the World Bank, is one of the worst the world has witnessed in modern times.
