China is furious after Japan's visit to Taiwan

(MENAFN) After a senior from its governing political party visited Taiwan, China claims it filed "serious" concerns with the Japanese government, claiming the island is a part of its sovereign territory and calling for a halt to any direct relations with Taipei.

During a news conference on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin was asked about the visit. He claimed that Beijing finds the action to be "provocative" and accused certain Japanese politicians of orchestrating public "stunts" for their own "selfish political gains."

He also mentioned, “China firmly opposes this and has made serious demarches to the Japanese side.” Noting that “we urge Japan to uphold the one-China principle… stop all forms of official contact with the Taiwan region, and stop sending wrong signals to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”

The Japanese team arrived in Taiwan on Monday, led by Hiroshige Seko, former minister of economics, commerce, and industry under the late prime minister Shinzo Abe and secretary-general of the Liberal Democratic Party. According to local media, Seko spoke with a number of high-ranking officials, including Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, who expressed the need for greater "exchanges in the field of security."
