Poland yields to EU on Ukraine financing

(MENAFN) As per Politico, citing diplomatic sources in Brussels, the Polish government caved in to EU pressure on Thursday and abandoned its objection to a package of measures involving millions of euros in aid to Ukraine. However, Warsaw is still at odds with six Western European nations over restrictions affecting Russian fertilizer supplies to Africa.

A package deal was at stake, which included €18 billion ($19 billion) in aid to Kiev, suspending €6.3 billion in EU money to Budapest until Hungary completed "reforms" sought by Brussels, and adhering to the US-backed minimum corporation tax rate. According to the site, Poland attempted to have the tax scheme reviewed separately after earlier agreeing to the package.

“There’s a lot of frustration with Poland jeopardizing Ukraine aid by blocking the minimum tax,” an anonymous EU diplomat informed the outlet, describing the step as “another hostage-taking situation.”

“It’s like an abusive relationship: They keep promising it will be different next time, but deep down we know we will get hurt over and over again,” according to another EU diplomat.
