Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary-General, expressed his thoughts on the fighting in Ukraine and the 'real possibility' of a full-fledged war between NATO and Russia if things go wrong, according to an interview released on Friday.

During the interview with a Norwegian broadcaster NRK, Mr. Stoltenberg said in his remarks that there was no doubt a full-blown war with Russia might break out if things go 'horribly wrong' the consequences of which will be severe for all sides.

“It was important to avoid a conflict that involves more countries in Europe and becomes a full-fledged war in Europe,” Stoltenberg added. Meanwhile, he emphasized the importance of continued military support to Ukraine which makes it very complicated.

At present the tensions between Russia and the West are quite high as the war in Ukraine is getting longer than expected. The NATO member states including the U.S., Germany, the UK, and others provide Ukraine with ammunition and weaponry. They also provide logistic support and train Ukrainian soldiers on the battleground to resist Russian aggression.

On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly accused NATO allies of destabilizing Eastern European nations by fueling the war in Ukraine through continued military support and providing training to Ukrainians to strike Russia.

Putin also said he was disappointed with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's recent comments that a 2015 peace deal for eastern Ukraine negotiated by France and Germany had bought time for Ukraine to prepare for the 2022 war.

The ongoing war in Ukraine and the growing hostility between the West and Russia leave no room for peace talks or agreement of any sort considering the situation on the battleground. Russia looks for options to finance the war, NATO member states send mercenaries, and supply weapons and ammunition, whereas, Ukrainians pay the price.
