German farmers issue meat shortage alert

(MENAFN) Based on the German Meat Industry Association, Germany may experience a meat shortage and subsequent price increase within the next four to six months, Die Welt reported the current week.

Westfleisch's group sales manager and VDF board member Hubert Kelliger spoke to the news organization, “in four, five, six months we will have gaps on the shelves.”

The supply of pork is anticipated to see the largest shortages, according to Kelliger. He claims that Berlin is adamant about cutting the quantity of cattle in half to safeguard the environment. Nonetheless, according to experts, this would result in the mass closure of meat-producing corporations, which would raise the cost of meat by 40 percent.

Reducing the number of cattle might also result in a reduction in the availability of natural fertilizer, which could lower vegetable yields or increase production costs owing to the high cost of artificial fertilizers. In either scenario, the German food problem would get worse.
