Threats from Elon Musk include "thermonuclear name and shame"
(MENAFN) Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Twitter, has issued a warning that he may name specific advertisers who are boycotting his social media platform because of pressure from leftist organizations. Such a move would probably lead to counter-boycotts as the billionaire's supporters fight back against big business in support of free speech.
Musk made the comment on Friday evening in reference to the dramatic decline in income that he has noticed at Twitter as a result of activist organizations urging advertisers to discontinue using the service, “a thermonuclear name and shame is exactly what will happen if this continues.”
He made the remark in response to a tweet from Mike Davis, a former assistant in the United States Senate, who added that by disclosing the advertisers, Musk's 114 million Twitter followers might start a counter-boycott.
The Tesla CEO successfully acquired Twitter for USD44 billion last Thursday, promising to reestablish free expression in America by creating a "digital town square" where a variety of viewpoints may be openly discussed. Following Musk's announcement, dozens of left-wing activist organizations reacted by attempting to convince advertisers to discontinue working with Twitter, claiming that by permitting "harmful" content, Musk would turn Twitter into a "direct threat to public safety." George Soros, a well-known activist and billionaire, supports some of the organizations, including Media Matters.
