Greta Thunberg demands that capitalism end
(MENAFN) Greta Thunberg, a Swedish environmental activist, has moved her focus to politics and called for the overthrow of capitalism, which she blamed for causing climate change.
The 19-year-old climate activist told the crowd at the London book launch for her book, "The Climate Book," on Sunday night that the world is "never going back to normal again." The Telegraph reported on the occasion and stated that she claimed a "system-wide transformation" was necessary to address global warming.
The capitalist system, added Thunberg, that is “defined by colonialism, imperialism, oppression and genocide by the so-called global North to accumulate wealth that still shapes our current world order.”
Before labeling the exploitation of fossil fuels "racist," she declared, " if economic growth is our only priority, then what we are experiencing now should be exactly what we should be expecting."
As several of Thunberg's detractors noted online, capitalism has generally resulted in rising living standards throughout the world while reducing carbon emissions in the capitalist USA since the year 2000. On Wednesday, Thunberg responded to these critiques by claiming that she is not in favor of a return to ideologies that "have all failed," including “socialism, liberalism, communism, conservatism, centrism, you name it.”
