A number of women displayed their educational credentials at a protest rally as part of the ongoing protests against the Taliban's restrictive policies but the Taliban members, quickly, dispersed them, ripping their documents.
The Taliban allegedly interrupted and suppressed the demonstration of women in Kabul, the Afghan capital, held by the Afghanistan Powerful Women Movement members on Monday, October 31.
According to protesters who spoke with the local media, the Taliban resorted to
violence, intimidation, and humiliation in addition to tearing some of the women's documents to scatter their protest march.
Meanwhile, a large number of female students at Badakhshan University in northeastern Afghanistan protested as well after being denied access to the university for
not wearing a burqa.
The girls are struck with a whip by one of the Taliban fighters in the publicly available videos, who is supposedly a virtue and vice official of the Taliban.
Student protests in Badakhshan received extensive coverage in domestic media. Social networks have strongly criticized the Taliban's treatment of students.
This comes as Richard Bennett, the UN's special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, said that the country had put in place harsh restrictions and hurdles aimed at making women“invisible” in society, a setback that was“unprecedented” in the country's history.
The Taliban's policy of barring girls from going to school, according to many Islamic studies experts, has no basis in Islam, and Afghanistan is the only country in the world to ban girls from getting an education past the 6th grade.
