Ukraine: Complete stop to Zaporizhzhia nuclear factory operations
(MENAFN) The biggest nuclear power factory in Europe has totally ceased operations, according to a statement from Ukraine on Sunday.
According to a statement from Energoatom, Ukraine's nuclear power operator, the last of the six reactors at the Zaporizhzhia facility was removed from the electrical grid at 3.41 a.m. (0041GMT). The agency reported, “preparations are underway for its cooling and transfer to a cold state.”
The factory in southeast Ukraine, which has been under Russian control since March, was cut off from the nation's electrical system last Monday amid rising fears of a nuclear catastrophe as Moscow and Kiev accuse one another of attacking the nuclear facility.
In order to "shut down power unit No. 6 and transfer it to the safest state - cold shutdown," according to Energoatom, a power line was reconnected on Saturday.
According to the statement, in such an event, the factory would need to be "powered by diesel generators, the duration of which is limited by the technological resource and the amount of available diesel fuel."
