Nicaragua may use Russian financial system

(MENAFN) Ivan Acosta, Nicaragua's Minister of Finance and Public Credit, told TASS on Monday that his country is prepared to investigate the use of the Mir payment system, which Moscow created in response to Western penalties, as well as permit the use of Russian credit and debit cards in the nation. This was done on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.

The media cited him as stating, “we are now considering various issues of cooperation in the field of finance. I’m still not sure how the Mir card works. We are looking into these issues. We are open to various banking and financial exchange possibilities.”

Acosta declared that Nicaragua would keep strengthening its connections with the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) countries.

When the United States targeted Russia with penalties in 2014, Russia began creating its own national payment system. The limitations at the time prevented customers of various Russian banks from temporarily using Visa and Mastercard.
