Russia demands Ukraine ease military tensions at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

(MENAFN) As the war between Russia and Ukraine enters its seventh month, Moscow has urged for international pressure to be applied to Ukraine in order to alleviate military tension at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

The largest nuclear power plant in Europe and one of the top ten largest in the world is Zaporizhzhia. The factory was taken over by Russian military not long after Moscow began its operation in the former Soviet nation on February 24. Ukraine claims that Russia is keeping large-caliber weaponry in the factory. Moscow disputes the charge.

In recent weeks, the plant has come in for a lot of criticism. The facility, which on Thursday started fires in the ash dumps of a nearby coal power station and isolated the plant from the electricity grid, is the subject of accusations of being targeted by both Russia and Ukraine.

“Pressure on the Ukrainian side to stop shelling can reduce military tension,” Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov stated in a virtual press conference when questioned what the Kremlin would like to witness done to defuse the current tension at Zaporizhzhia. He highlighted, “All countries are obliged to put pressure on Ukraine so that it stops exposing the European continent to danger.”
