At least three people were injured in the Wednesday blast in Mazar-e-Sharif, the provincial capital of Balkh in northern Afghanistan, according to local Taliban security officials.

The blast occurred in the Darwaza-e-Balkh area of Police District 4 in Mazar-e-Sharif at around 11:30 on Wednesday morning.

According to Mohammad Asif Waziri, the Taliban spokesman for the office of the chief of police in Balkh province, this explosion occurred when a person wanted to take explosives into the city.

The Taliban official, Waziri, further stated that the explosion has not inflicted casualties; however, three people have been wounded as a result of the blast.

Some locals, nevertheless, maintained that there were more injuries as a result of this occurrence than the Balkh province Taliban authorities had reported.

According to the Public Health Head for Balkh province, Najibullah Tawana, the explosion resulted in the injuries of six people who have been taken to the Balkh Provincial Hospital.

Social media videos made after the explosion showed that several people had fallen on the ground and that locals were taking them to hospitals.

The blast on Wednesday in Mazar-e-Sharif, the latest to hit the country in the year since the Taliban took power, elicited no immediate claims of responsibility.

The Khorasan branch of the Islamic State (IS-K) has claimed the majority of the responsibility for the recent rise in bombings in a number of Afghan provinces.
