Drunk American airwoman kills child in Italy
(MENAFN) Barbara Scandella, the mother of Giovanni Zanier, told La Repubblica on Tuesday that Julia Bravo, the 20-year-old American airwoman who struck Giovanni Zanier, 15, with her car while driving intoxicated in Porcia, must go on trial in Italy and not be deported back to the United States.
Scandella claimed “that woman must be tried in Italy and serve her full term.” Adding that “we all know of previous incidents that have involved the American military in terrible accidents here. The truth is in these areas, they can do what they want and remain unpunished.”
Bravo is now under house arrest and is accused of murder by vehicle. Later on Tuesday, a hearing to maintain her arrest warrant is set.
According to an eyewitness who had been partying in the same club, the airwoman was so inebriated when she got into her car outside a disco just before crashing into Zanier. She then drove off in the other direction of the Aviano airfield, where she is stationed. Around 2:30 a.m., she ran the teenager over on a bike path and was taken into custody by the police. Her blood alcohol level was four times the legal limit. She also ran into the kerb that separated the bike lane from the road and a sign.
