Condition of Salman Rushdie is improving, according to his agent
(MENAFN) Salman Rushdie, the well-known novelist who was taken to the hospital on Friday with critical wounds after being repeatedly stabbed at a public event in New York, is now off the ventilator, and his condition is getting better, according to his agency.
“He’s off the ventilator, so the road to recovery has begun,” his agent, Andrew Wylie, stated through an email to Reuters. “It will be long; the injuries are severe, but his condition is headed in the right direction.”
Rushdie, 75, was about to give a speech on artistic freedom at Chautauqua Institution in western New York when, according to police, a 24-year-old man rushed the podium and stabbed the Indian-born author. Rushdie has had a bounty placed on his head ever since Iran urged Muslims to kill him for his 1988 book "The Satanic Verses," which led to the author living under house arrest.
At a court hearing on Saturday, the suspect, Hadi Matar of Fairview, New Jersey, entered a not-guilty plea to the counts of attempted murder and assault, according to Nathaniel Barone, his court-appointed attorney.
