Russia declares victory over crucial outpost in Donbass

(MENAFN) The Donetsk People's Republic (DPRvital)'s town of Peski is now entirely under Russian control, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

“As a result of the offensive by the allied forces [Russian troops and DPR militia] the settlement of Peski has been fully liberated” from the Ukrainian military, the ministry’s representative Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov declared amid briefing on Saturday.

One of the key foundations of Ukraine's intricate defense line in the DPR has been Peski, which is about 2 kilometers from the Donetsk Airport.

Since 2015, the village had undergone extensive fortification. A DPR militia leader said last week that the region had become "essentially one enormous garrison," from which all residents had long since been evacuated. He noted that while Ukrainian defenses had been constructed "according to NATO standards," all structures in Peski are encircled by trenches.

Intense combat and artillery shelling occurred during the combined effort to take the hamlet, which started in late July. Early in August, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that Peski and the surrounding city of Avdeevka were in "just hell there." It is indescribable in words even.
