Italian solider in Ukraine under investigation at home

(MENAFN) An alleged neo-fascist sympathizer's case has been opened for criminal investigation in Italy. He claimed to have traveled to Ukraine to fight Russia and stop the country from being "denazified."

The first Italian to be prosecuted in the nation for participating in the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev by fighting on the Ukrainian side is 19-year-old Kevin Chiappalone, who is accused of engaging in mercenary activities.

Chiappalone is the subject of an investigation by Genoa's anti-mafia and anti-terrorism prosecutor, Marco Zocco, according to a Wednesday report from the Italian ANSA news agency. According to a 1995 law that forbids Italians from taking part in an armed conflict on behalf of foreign countries, the man could spend two to seven years in prison.

The investigation reportedly began after Chiappalone gave an unnamed interview to the Italian Panorama weekly back in March in which he claimed he would "do what is necessary," including kill "the enemy," to stop Russia from allegedly "reviving the Soviet Union."
