Pontiff Francis prays for peace discussions amid Russia, Ukraine

(MENAFN) Pontiff Francis has called for his followers to pray for talks between Russia and Ukraine to continue.
In Sunday’s Angelus service, he asked to be “near the suffering Ukrainian people” and questioned “how is it possible not to understand that war only creates destruction and death, driving people apart, killing truth and dialogue.”

The remarks, which were also shared on Twitter, were just the latest of many declarations the pope has made on the war. He has repeatedly called for the two sides to revive meeting and for Western nations to stop beefing up their defense costs due to the conflict.

Earlier in July he said he would “renew [his] closeness to the Ukrainian people, who are daily tormented by the brutal attacks that ordinary people are paying for,” urging followers to pray for an “end to this senseless war.”

Pontiff Francis has repeatedly asked for “de-escalation” and to stop conflicts in Ukraine, recently stating that while “the world needs peace,” that peace cannot be based “on the balance of arms or mutual fear.”
