Summer College Preview Program Returns To Carnegie Mellon Qatar

Doha: Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), a Qatar Foundation partner university, is hosting the first Summer College Preview Program in the CMU-Q building since the pandemic began. 

Nearly 70 high school students are spending two weeks exploring university life and learning about the programs of study at CMU-Q.

Michael Trick, Dean of CMU-Q, welcomed the students to the building at the opening ceremony.“I am so delighted that you will have the full, in-person Carnegie Mellon experience. We have designed SCPP so students can get a taste of university life, and learn about the possibilities that our programs offer,” he said. 

This year, CMU-Q is offering a programming class for the first time, in addition to classes in writing and mathematics. 

“All of the students at CMU-Q, regardless of their field of study, must take computer programming,” said Damian Dourado, Director of SCPP. 
“This is a great chance for high school students to learn the basics of programming, skills they can use in many different areas in the years to come.”

Students also choose to learn about one of the programs offered at CMU-Q: biological sciences, business administration, computer science or information systems. At the end of SCPP, students will present their final projects.

“SCPP can help students decide what they would like to study in university, and what sort of careers they would like to do afterward,” said Dourado.“They learn a lot of information, and they also meet current CMU-Q students and alumni who can offer insight and guidance.”

Admission applications for fall 2023 will be accepted as of September 1.
