Turkey reveals reason for not imposing penalties on Russia

(MENAFN) The Turkish leader’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin has stated that Turkey does not follow the Western lead in sanctioning Russia since it is directed by pragmatic financial thoughts and “a policy of balance.”

In a meeting with Haberturk TV, Kalin stated that Ankara is chasing “a policy of balance” when it comes to its ties with Russia.

He clarified, mentioning that Turkey also likes good ties with the US and further Western nations “As we are dependent on foreign sources for energy, we develop relations with Russia as we do with Iran.”

He stated that “We do not impose sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine war. Of course, we have to protect the interests of our country,” adding in Kalin’s opinion, imposing sanctions on Moscow “will harm Turkey's economy more than Russia’s.”

Kalin underlined that “We took a clear stand. At present, the Westerners have also accepted it. They do not say anything about Turkey's position for geopolitical reasons.”
