Malaysian automobile sales fell in May owing to chip shortage

(MENAFN) According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), overall vehicle sales in Malaysia declined 11.76 percent from April to 49,603 in May owing to a scarcity of semiconductors and components.

The MAA stated in a statement that chip and component shortages, as well as logistical delays, continue to hamper some manufacturers. The decline was partly ascribed to a shorter working month owing to the Hari Raya celebration.

Total car sales jumped 5.08 percent year on year in May, while they increased 7.44 percent from January to May.

Meanwhile, overall car manufacturing increased 15.56 percent year on year in May, and 7.07 percent from January to May.

The MAA anticipates higher sales in June, owing to the sales tax exemption incentive for customers purchasing passenger automobiles (which is set to expire at the end of June 2022) and car firms' active sales push.

However, it stated that chip and component shortages, as well as supply chain disruptions, will continue to hamper some manufacturers.
