(MENAFN) On Wednesday, an Ethiopian official said that a night curfew had been enforced in Gambella city, the seat of Ethiopia's western Gambella province.
The curfew, which begins at 8 p.m. and lasts until dawn, was implemented in the aftermath of a rebel attack on Gambella city on Tuesday, according to Umod Ujulu, Chief Administrator of Gambella area.
Ujulu stated that only security forces would be permitted on the streets of Gambella after 8 p.m., according to state-affiliated media source Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC).
According to Ujulu, "a joint sudden attack by the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and Gambella Liberation Front (GLF) rebel fighters on Gambella city on Tuesday has been foiled by the joint efforts of regional and federal security forces."
Ujulu stated that several rebel fighters were killed in the unsuccessful onslaught, although he did not provide a death toll.
The Gambella region chief administrator urged the people to report any suspicious behavior in Gambella city and to assist security forces in maintaining the city's tranquility.
