Spain’s FM takes urgent flight to Brussels to negotiate Algeria catastrophe
(MENAFN) Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister Jose Manuel Albares annulled his visit to the Summit of Americas in the US for an emergency conference in Brussels to negotiate the catastrophe with Algeria.
Algeria stated it was stopping business with Spain and halting a two-decade-old bond and collaboration agreement.
Spain’s alignment with Morocco over the freedom of Western Sahara is the cause for the major political disagreement.
On Thursday, European Union officials called for Algeria to think again of its decision, stating they were “extremely worried” by the situation.
Albares is seeing European Commission Vice-President and Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis.
“What’s true is that our trade relations are not national, they are European. That’s why it’s logical for the minister to travel to Brussels today,” Spanish Finance Minister Nadia Calvino announced on Friday.
