Ibtechar, one of Qatar's top practical innovation and turnkey solutions providers, has developed a drone tracker and a GPS system that ensure the safety and security of critical infrastructure, VIP residents, national borders, and military facilities.
This project is particularly important at a time when the skies are wide open to any sort of trespass, as remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs) are increasingly used for numerous civilian and, more dangerously, military purposes.
Keeping in mind the potentially hostile or unwarranted uses of such technologies — for example, espionage, vandalism, or even simply personal adventure — it becomes more and more challenging for governments to secure their airports, power lines, and other vital assets that can be targets for drone attacks.
That is why Ibtechar addressed this issue, by providing a customized solution made locally by a dedicated team of researchers and technologists with extensive knowledge and expertise in applied research and counter-drone systems.
To come up with a full-fledged solution, the development process involved five versions of tracking system software, three versions of printed circuit board (PCB), and 12 versions of tracker case. Based on the proof of concept, the prototypes went through 487 flight tests in 19 locations, as well as 676 drive and walk tests.
The new product has multiple features, including real-time tracking, pop-up notification, and SMS alerts; smart geo-fencing; drone whitelist/blacklist; compatibility with global navigation satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS, and BDS); base-station triangulation (cell ID); IMU, Tilt, vibration sensor, and NFC; and offline mode.
According to Nayef Al Ibrahim, CEO and co-founder of Ibtechar, the project was one of the company's best achievements in relation to investment in emerging technologies and security solutions for modern technology localization.“This is part of our mission of contributing to a knowledge-based economy, under Qatar National Vision 2030,” he said.

Another aspect of the project was location and compass calibration (chip integration with drone hardware/software systems to localize GPS signals and direction trajectory). The scope of cooperation also includes the study and evaluation of safety and hazards, to make sure that chip installation will not terminate the effective warranties with drone manufacturers, while maintaining chip resilience and stability during operation.
With these strengths, the new tracking system is able to identify the operating drones by displaying the drone itself, its serial number, the commercial frequency used, and motion details (speed, altitude, azimuth, path, etc.).
Since its establishment in 2011 as the first incubated company in Qatar, Ibtechar has proved its extraordinary ability to meet the market needs and client requirements, by offering tailored innovation management, consultancy, and development services. Standing out at the forefront of the innovation and turnkey solutions sector, Ibtechar boasts a high profile as the prolific developer of 70% of all certified innovation spaces in Qatar.
Ibtechar's strategy focuses on in-house research and development (R&D) processes as the functional model to achieve corporate goals, by developing new services/products and improving the existing ones, with the ultimate goal of taking practical innovation to the next level and further moving towards a national knowledge-based economy.
