Al Humaidi Family of Kuwait’s ‘London Resort’ Starting to Come to Life

The Al Humaidi Family of Kuwait’s US$3.6 billion ‘London Resort’ project is finally starting to take shape following the announcement of the first businesses chosen to partner with Kuwaiti European Holding Group on the project. 

Three British firms, Electrosonic, Garmendale, and Katapult, have been unveiled as the first businesses to be chosen by The London Resort to help create the UK’s first, next-generation theme park, it was announced in early October. 

It was also announced that 65 other businesses, half of which are from the United Kingdom, had been shortlisted as potential candidates who may be called upon in the future. 

A Clear Appetite for the Resort

Nearly 2,000 businesses registered their interest in less than a month to help deliver the world-class, sustainable mega-resort, demonstrating a clear appetite within the business community to bring the project to life. 

“That so many businesses have registered to be part of the procurement process demonstrates the value the London Resort will bring to the southeast and the country as a whole,” said Tim Aker, Development Manager at the Kent and Medway Federation of Small Businesses.

Figures released also revealed that almost 90% of these registrants had been from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—businesses with fewer than 250 employees—and 30% of these were from Kent and Essex, the areas closest to where the London Resort is planned to be built. This shows that the London Resort is in a great position to help the UK Government meet its target that one in every £3 will be spent with UK SMEs. 

Nearly one-third of registrations came from firms in the construction sector, with the remaining two-thirds representing retail, food and drink, creative, security, logistics, engineering, and entertainment firms.

What is the Al Humaidi Family of Kuwait’s ‘London Resort’? 

The London Resort is by far one of the most ambitious projects of its kind ever undertaken in Europe. Estimated to cost a whopping US$3.6 billion to build, it has attracted a flurry of interest from businesses and consumers alike. 

According to industry commentators, the London Resort will be the first European development of its kind, to be built from scratch in nearly 30 years, and the very first in the United Kingdom. Many are already referring to the London Resort as the Disneyland of the current generation. 

Estimated to be one of the UK’s largest single-site employers, the London Resort will contribute greatly to the UK economy. Independent research estimates that the resort will generate: 

  • Over £50 billion over 25 years of gross economic activity.
  • More than 6,000 construction jobs.
  • 8,700 jobs in 2024, rising to over 17,000 by 2038.
  • Up to £200 million in tax revenues by 2038. 

A wide range of businesses is set to benefit from this £50 billion of gross economic activity generated in the resort’s first 25 years. The local community is set to benefit too, with the anticipated direct and indirect creation of 48,000 jobs by 2038. 

Speaking of Disneyland, its success stands as a testament to the impact that a global theme park can have. An independent study on the economic impact of Disneyland Paris found that it added €68 billion to the French economy in its first 25 years. The region where the park is located, Seine-et-Marne, has benefitted from €22.4 billion. 

The Al Humaidi Family Kuwait is Pushing the Boundaries

The London Resort will be the Al Humaidi Family of Kuwait’s magnum opus and will push the boundaries in terms of what has been seen in the UK before.

Earmarked for construction on a 535-acre site in Kent, the London Resort will sit just a short train ride from one of the world’s biggest tourist cities—London, which attracts some 30 million tourists per year (outside of global pandemics, of course!) 

The resort itself will consist of several themed park areas, over 3,500 hotel rooms, live entertainment, shopping experiences, and more. It will operate on a scale similar (and unsurprisingly) to venues like Disneyland and Universal Studios. 

When construction of the Al Humaidi Family Kuwait’s London Resort is complete, 465 hectares of resort space will be accessible to guests. This will make it over twice the size of Thorpe Park Resort, which is currently one of the UK’s leading entertainment parks. 

The Al Humaidi Family of Kuwait’s London Resort will also focus heavily on sustainability. It will feature a vast green network made up of amenity areas and parkland, which will provide a place of refuge for London wildlife and help to ensure its continued co-existence with Kent.

While specific details of the London Resort aren’t available yet, the Al Humaidi Family Kuwait’s KEH Group has hinted that it will include something for everyone. According to rumours, there will be no less than six individually themed areas within the park that will give all visitors a great experience no matter their interests by incorporating everything from history to fantasy and science fiction. 

A range of consumer experiences will also be on offer. These will include gift shops, boutiques, and a central shopping pavilion with dining options. Current plans will see visitors enter the resort through the main plaza that leads them and hotel guests through a central high street before leading on to the park’s main attractions.

The Al Humaidi Family of Kuwait’s Biggest Project Yet

Although the London Resort will be smaller than Disneyland, there’s potential for it to have a much bigger impact and is by far the Al Humaidi Family of Kuwait’s biggest project to date. When it’s complete, estimates suggest that The London Resort will bring in 8.2 million visitors per year.

By developing the London Resort, the Al Humaidi Family Kuwait hopes to further solidify its image as a serious contender in the European entertainment market. The Al Humaidi Family also hopes to benefit from the rapidly growing London tourism market and deliver a quality experience to patrons at the same time.

Registration is Still Open

The London Resort’s CEO, PY Gerbeau, is very keen to stress that the door for more businesses to register is still very much open. 

“We will be the first theme park across Europe, to be built from scratch in nearly 30 years. We will be one of the only operationally carbon neutral parks in the world. And with our investment in sustainability and the environment, we will be a beacon of what can be achieved when the environment, commerce, and entertainment flourish together, hand in hand,” he said in an announcement.
