5G is entering a new phase where not only will consumers benefit from new applications but also businesses and indus-tries will take advantage of new capabilities and the pace of change will continue to be high.

The GCC countries have most advanced network and ICT markets in mobile communi-cations where 5G is strongly deployed and is network ready, said an expert at a event.Zoran Lazervic, CTO, Ericsson MEA discussed at a media briefing yesterday, the latest edition of the Ericsson Mobility report which provided industry-leading projections and analyses of the latest trends in the mobile industry, including subscription, mobile data traffic and population coverage.

Lazervic said,“This is a special mobility report because it is 10 years from the moment when we started the first Ericsson mobility report. When we started in 2011 it was almost the beginning of 4G network which was two years into 2009 when the first 4G was deployed and it is at a similar stage now because two years ago we started with 5G.“GCC has a very advanced and diverse market and we have some of the most advanced networks in the GCC where 5G is strongly deployed, so there is no limitation for using 5G for enterprises because it has a network that is ready.”

He said,“4G has rocketed from 9 million to a projected 4.7 billion subscrip-tions by the end of 2021. There are more than 5.5 billion new smartphone subscriptions and mobile networks that carry almost 300 times more mobile data traffic than in 2011 which is an enormous growth.

”Speaking about the mobile data traffic per smartphone (GB per month) he said,“The monthly global average usage per smartphone will reach 11.4GB by the end of 2021 and is forecasted to reach 41GB by the end of 2027. The GCC countries, data traffic per smartphone is expected to be the highest globally at the end of 2021 at 22GB per month and by the end of the forecast period, it is expected to reach an average of 46GB per month.” He said, the GCC is a global leading market when it comes to mobile communications par-ticularly to 5G. We expect 80 percent of mobile subscriptions in Gulf will be 5G by 2027, so it is going to be dominant tech-nology by 2027.

Citing the report which shows how fast 5G subscrip-tions uptake is adopting when compared to 4G adoption he said,“5G subscription is esti-mated to reach 1 billion which is two years faster than 4G as 4G subscriptions took four years in the first years of deployment to reach 1 billion subscriptions but 5G is two times faster.”“When we look globally, we see North America will be the region with highest penetration of 5G subscription reaching 90 percent by 2027.

In Middle East and North Africa 4G will remain the dominant technology declining from the peak, and it is going to have 45 percent 4G subscription and we expect 5G to reach 25 percent by 2027 there,” he added
