(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar University Young Scientists Centre (QU-YSC) won four prizes for innovative projects at the Sixth International Exhibition for Innovation (ISIF 21), within TEKNOFEST Festival in Turkey. The annual event was organised every year under the auspices of the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology, hosted by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TURKPATENT) and the International Federation of Inventors Association (IFIA), with the support of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
Research titled 'Marine Degradable Plastic Based on Soybean By-Products', won the gold medal presented by the Sixth International Exhibition for Innovation, for its significant contribution to the reduction of plastic wastes.
Research titled (Development of organic–inorganic halide perovskites (OHPs) microfiber based memristors won the silver medal. Presented by QU medicine student Muhammad al-Hurr, the project dealt with the manufacture and development of micro-fibers with stability, high efficiency and superior electrical capacity for use in many memory-saving applications for optoelectronic devices.
Finally, a project titled 'Sports innovation using modern scientific concepts: a case study in Qatar', presented by Abdul Rahman al-Kuwari, Hamad al-Shahrani, Salem al-Sulaiti and Turki al-Mutawa, eleventh grade students at Jassim bin Hamad Secondary School for boys, won the silver medal and gold medal presented by the State Office of Industrial Property in Macedonia. The students developed scientific techniques to convert a traditional Qatari game it into a modern team game.
The winners had participated in the STEM programmes, and capacity building and research initiatives provided by QU-YSC, which facilitated the transfer and acquisition of knowledge by establishing partnerships with the various centres, research bodies and researchers at QU.
Students learned using applied methods in modern university laboratories, and student-centred learning methods. By participating in the exhibition, they were able to publish their research, which represents innovative and effective scientific solutions in different industries and applications. They also reviewed their capabilities in research, investigation, testing, verification and presentation of results efficiently in scientific posters.
Prof Dr Noora al-Thani, director of QU-YSC, congratulated the winners and expressed her pride in their achievements and honourable representation of their country among hundreds of participants. She also thanked QU-YSC's partners, the Ras Laffan Industrial City Community Outreach Programme and Unesco Doha Office.
