HIA's global status boosting retail sector through Shop Qatar

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The organisers of Shop Qatar are leveraging Hamad International Aiport's (HIA) status as 'Best Airport in the Middle East,' and being the busiest in the region, to promote the tourism and retail sector as the global economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shop Qatar is the first major festival in Qatar in 18 months and will run until October 10.

“The HIA is the busiest international airport globally, and Qatar Airways is the biggest airline in the region in terms of the number of passengers flying. I hope with time, and as vaccination rates head towards 90 percent, we will see some relaxation so that some border control and protocols will become easier and we are going to see more people,” Berthold Trenkel, a Qatar Tourism official, said.

“I think the interesting piece for me is we are working with Qatar Duty Free and over 60 hotels so that people have more chances of winning,” he added.

Trenkel also lauded the synergy among Qatar Airways, HIA, and Qatar Tourism. He noted that the collaboration presents an opportunity for Qatar to leverage promotions and activities by either party.

“The main objectives for these events are to stimulate the local economy and get people to shop locally. The other is to attract international tourism from neighbouring countries to bring people here. We know only a small number of people are entering the country because of the restrictions, but there is also a big opportunity for tourism. We can attract people who are on transit to stop in Qatar and shop,” he added.

With over 15 venues, 62 hotels, and for the first time Qatar Duty Free participating, this year's edition promises to attract travellers and tourists via the HIA.

Themed“One Festival. Countless Experiences,” hundreds of prizes, including cash and cars worth over QR4m, will be won through four weekly raffle draws.

For every QR200 spent, shoppers will receive a coupon giving them a chance to win. For the first time, shoppers will be able to submit raffle entries via WhatsApp. Four raffles will be held at Doha Festival City, Hyatt Plaza, Lagoona Mall, and Mall of Qatar.
