OAS to observe November 28 general elections in Honduras

(MENAFN- Caribbean News Global) WASHINGTON, USA – The Organization of American States (OAS) and the government of Honduras today signed an agreement to send an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to the November 28 general elections, during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro recalled that between 2018 and 2019 the OAS provided electoral cooperation to the National Congress of Honduras that served as the basis for the creation of the new electoral bodies: the National Electoral Council and the Tribunal of Electoral Justice.

“These will be the first general elections to be held under this new institutional structure. The EOM will have a significant number of observers deployed in different departments of the country on election day,” added secretary-general Almagro.

For his part, the minister of foreign affairs of Honduras, Lisandro Rosales, said that the dispatch of the Mission is a “great support” to the democratic institutions of his country. “Clean elections are the path that all nations must follow. Thank you secretary-general for sending the Observer Mission,” said foreign minister Rosales.

Since 1963, the OAS has observed eleven electoral processes in Honduras.
