Qatar-Tajikistan joint intergovernmental commission to meet in Doha in May


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Ambassador of Tajikistan to Qatar, H E Khisrav Sohibzoda, has said that the meeting of Qatar-Tajikistan Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Trade and Technical Cooperation will be held in Doha in May this year.

He was talking to media after addressing a press conference on Tajikistan's presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) for 2020-2021.

He said bilateral visits of the highest level were also expected in 2020. Tajikistan would also celebrate a cultural day of Qatar, he said. Earlier addressing the press conference, the Ambassador said that on November 10, 2020, the Republic of Tajikistan assumed the Chairmanship of the SCO from the Russian Federation. The Chairmanship of Tajikistan coincides with the 20th anniversary of the organisation. 

The event was attended by H E Ambassadors of Russia, Turkey, China, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Sri Lanka, Belarus among other diplomats. 

He said Qatar has close and fruitful cooperation with SCO member states. 'We think that SCO is playing a crucial role in world economy, trade cooperation and Qatar being a regional leader in economic development can be a strong partner of SCO member states in enhancing regional trade ties, he told media persons.

'We also highly appreciate Qatar's efforts for resolution of international, regional issues such as Afghanistan. Qatar has very constructive role in this regard. The SCO has special group on cooperation between the SCO and Afghanistan.

He said Qatar and SCO's special group on Afghanistan can have more cooperation to bring peace and stability in Afghanistan.

'Doha platform is unique where all groups of Afghanistan have been provided with an atmosphere of respect to talk directly and discuss their own problems. Tajikistan thanks Qatar and appreciates its role to resolve Afghan issue.

The Ambassador further said that Doha mediation process had started its journey on the road to peace. 'Last year, the US and the Taliban signed an agreement that will influence peace-making process in Afghanistan.

He said that Dushanbe will host Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process conference on March 29-30 which would discuss Afghanistan's economic development and its integration in regional economy.

In the press conference, the Ambassador said that the Chairmanship of Tajikistan in the SCO will be carried out in accordance with the fundamental documents of the organisation and will be aimed at consistent implementation of the adopted international agreements, decisions, programme documents and arrangements of the final documents of the meetings of the Heads of State Council and the Heads of Government Council of the  member-states of the SCO for the progressive development of the organisation. 

'The Chairmanship will be based on the principles of equality, continuity, mutual understanding and respect for the opinion of all member-states of the organisation, he added.

Sohibzoda said that the motto of the Tajikistan's Chairmanship of the SCO is '20 years of the SCO: Cooperation for Stability and Development. The main goals of the chairmanship are strengthening of friendship and good-neighbourliness among the SCO member states; further promotion of ‘Shanghai Spirit'; maintaining peace, security and stability in the region; increasing interaction in trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres; strengthening the image and international positioning of the SCO; improving the legal basis of the organisation; and expanding the cooperation mechanisms. 

Towards achieving aims of the chairmanship, he said, Tajikistan in cooperation with the other SCO member states will focus its efforts on assistance in strengthening practical cooperation in combating terrorism, separatism and extremism, illegal drug trafficking and cross-border organised crime. 

The member states will adopt necessary measures for the implementation of the initiative of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan H E Emomali Rahmon regarding the establishment of the SCO Anti-Drug Center in Dushanbe. 

In the economic sphere, he said, there will be development and adoption of a priority action plan for 2021-2022, to overcome the socioeconomic, financial and humanitarian consequences of the new coronavirus pandemic in the region; and elaboration and adoption of the concept of establishing economic growth zones in the SCO region.  

There will be assistance and promotion of wider use of transit potential of the member states; facilitation of interaction between the Business Council and the Interbank Consortium of the SCO, arranging their cooperation with international financial institutions, improving the legal basis of the cooperation; and assistance in the promotion of  business incubators in the SCO region to support startups.
