Jordan- Senate committee reviews trade obstacles, exports to Palestinian market

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Jan. 14 (Petra) - The Senate's Financial and Economic Committee, headed by Jamal Sarayreh, discussed on Thursday, with presidents of Jordan's commerce chambers, the obstacles that impede entry of Jordanian products into the Palestinian market, post-coronavirus recovery, and trade agreements with other countries.
Speaking during the meeting, Sarayreh stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to strengthen the "participatory" public- private sector partnership, to achieve post-pandemic economic recovery, which requires "joint" cooperation to support the economic sectors with "all possible means" to attract new investments to reduce unemployment.
Sarayreh called for the need to review the Paris Protocol between the Palestinian Authority and Tel Aviv, which is considered a "major" obstacle to increasing Jordanian exports to the Palestinian market.
For their part, the commerce chambers' heads called on providing soft loans to small and medium enterprises, deferring their bank installments, and postponing collection of income tax to maintain the cash flow to the market, and remove obstacles to develop economic relations between the Kingdom and Palestine.
In this context, the committee's members stressed the importance of preparing comprehensive studies on trade agreements with some neighboring countries, related to suspension of some commodity imports, and reviewing the free trade agreement with Turkey.
The Paris Protocol, in place since 1994, is a key obstacle that made the Jordanian-Palestinian trade exchange inable to reach the "desired" level, the committe memebers said, adding that the pact has put restrictions on economic activity with Palestine.
The Paris Protocol's lists specify commodity entry into the Palestinian market, in specific quantities, the senators pointed out, highlighting the obstacles related to the "complex" inspection procedures on goods and transportation and freight costs that exceed real figures, in similar conditions.
