UAE- Now, pay your parking fees in Sharjah with a touch of the screen

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A whopping 800 devices with the latest touchscreen technology are being installed by the Sharjah Municipality to enable customers to pay parking fees in public parking lots. Around 400 devices are already up and the rest of the installations will be ready by the first quarter of the next year.

The plan follows the civic body's efforts to carry out digital transformation and offer digital services that reduce time and energy of customers. It will contribute to the number of payment options for the public during the payment of public and regular parking fees in the city of Sharjah.

Thabet Al-Tarifi, director-general of the Sharjah City Municipality, confirmed that the 800 devices will help pay parking fees with touch technology and it comes as a continuation of the first phase of a plan during which the municipality launched 400 devices in different areas of Sharjah.

The project is the first-of-its-kind in the Middle East and is in line with digital scanning of vehicles, which was rolled out by the municipality to inspect public parking spaces. The technology helps read the license plates of vehicles whose owners have paid fees using these devices.

Khalid bin Falah Al-Suwaidi, assistant director-general for the Customer Service Department, pointed out that the municipality is keen to provide its services easily and conveniently through the 'Sabeq' digital transformation programme. The municipality has launched a number of projects that are in line with these trends and one of them is the touch-enabled public parking fees and digital scanning of vehicles, he added.

Ali Ahmed Abu Ghazeen pointed out that the 400 payment devices that were set up during the first phase currently cover more than 15,000 parking lots in various parts of Sharjah city. Its front façade was changed and replaced with an electronic screen that allows customers to pay the fees without the need to place a reservation card on the front end of the vehicle, he said. This contributed to supporting the municipality's initiative to become a paperless civic body and preserve the environment, Abu Ghazeen underlined.

He pointed out that the municipality has provided customers with many options to pay parking fees to facilitate them and choose what suits them. The options include payments via SMS or through the long-term subscriptions and directly through the machines. The municipality is about to launch an electronic wallet application soon, which will allow customers to fill it with a balance that can be used to pay parking fees, he added.
