UN to start new round of debates for peaceful Syria in January


(MENAFN) As of January 2021, a new series of negotiations to debate legal principles for a peaceful Syria will take place in the Switzerland capital, Geneva, according to a statement released Friday by the UN special envoy for Syria.

Local reporters cited Geir Pedersen as saying that there was "some common ground" in the UN following five days of talks.

The official stated that "So, when the next meeting will be starting on the 25th of January, the COVID situation allowing, what we will be discussing is then constitutional principles or basic principles of the Constitution."

He further included, "I'm very pleased to be able to inform you that the small body " have now agreed. And I think this is actually the first time we have managed to do that."
The round of talks to introduce peace to the war-torn Syria started Monday in Geneva, with strict constraints adopted by the UN on access to representatives as part of cautionary measures to halt the pandemic.
