Iraq, UK urge de-escalation of tensions in Gulf region


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BAGHDAD, Nov 30 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein received British Minister of State for Middle East and North Africa James Cleverly at his office on Monday.
Both sides stressed the need of deescalating the tension in the Arabian Gulf region and adopting dialogue to preserve regional stability, according to a statement from the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
They discussed a range of regional and international issues.
On bilateral cooperation, they expressed desire to speed up the negotiations on a partnership agreement during the upcoming meetings, due in January.
The Iraqi minister praised the role of the United Kingdom in training the Iraqi military and security forces and intelligence sharing.
He said that security cooperation is vital for foiling the terrorist ats and preventing reemergence of the so-called Islamic State, the statement pointed out.
On his part, Cleverly reaffirmed the UK support to Iraq in the political, economic and security areas.
He also renewed the UK commitment to supporting Iraq in its war against terrorism, voicing confidence in the ability of the Iraqi authorities to hold successful and orderly legislative polls. (end)
