Jordan- 20 New COVID-19 cases recorded on Tuesday, testing capacity to double soon: Minister

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, May 19 (Petra) -- A total of 20 new COVID-19 infections were reported in Jordan on Tuesday bringing the caseload to 649 since the outbreak of the pandemic in early March, Minister of Health Saad Jabir announced this evening.
Breaking down the new cases at a daily press briefing, Jabir said three cases were for truck drivers, a Jordanian and two Arab nationals, and were detected at the Omary border crossing with Saudi Arabia.
Also a nurse working in a medical center in the area was infected, forcing the closure of the clinic for three days. Two Jordanians who have recently come from the UAE and placed in quarantine also tested positive for the virus, the minister added.
Additionally, 14 cases were discovered in the Zarqa governorate, Jabir said, adding that these cases came into contact with the contacts of an infected truck driver from the Mafraq governorate. All of the residents of the neighborhood where the 14 cases were detected will be retested on Thursday and Friday, the minister said.
Four patients have recovered and left hospitals, pushing the active caseload to 142, according to Jabir. With regard to testing, a total of 4,126 tests were conducted today bringing the total of tests made since the start of the crisis to 148,482.
Furthermore, the minister announced that a modern testing device will arrive in the next few days and will help double the daily testing capacity by 4,000 tests.
Responding to a question on the cases recorded in Zarqa, the minister said the appearance of cases in a wide geographical area is not a "serious indication", explaining that the Kingdom has not arrived at "dangerous thresholds" yet.
"What would be more concerning is the doubling of cases for three consecutive days or discovering three hotspots of an unknown source of infection," Jabir indicated. The minister described the situation as "good so far", stressing that epidemiological teams are capable of clearing up any hotspot and isolating those infected from the rest of population.
"Our ability to cope with the epidemic has become stronger," the minister assured.
