Laos to increase its electricity export

The energy and mines ministry of Laos is taking measures and increasing efforts to improve the dam safety as the government is trying to increase its electricity exports to foreign trading partners.

Local daily Vientiane Times said on Monday that the country earns a large revenue from electricity, specially by exporting to neighbouring countries and ASEAN states like Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Singapore.

The country is aiming to raise its electricity exports to reach 20,000MW in the period between 2020 and 2030, the authorities are currently working on improving the dam safety.

Lao Minister of Energy and Mines Khammany Inthirath submitted a report at the yearly energy and mines sector meeting in February showed that the ministry is going to carry out safety inspections at large and small scale hydropower projects across the country.

The inspections are going to be performed jointly with central and local authorities along with foreign experts.
