Clashes in Baghdad kill demonstrator, wound 15 others
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Iraqi Independent High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR) announced brutal conflicts erupted between anti-government protesters and security forces in Baghdad and resulted in the killing of a local protester.
Xinhua news agency quoted an IHCHR member Ali al-Baiyati as saying prompted the security forces used tear gas bombs and fired bullets in the air to separate the demonstrators, who carried out the clashes in al-Khalani Square in downtown Baghdad, causing death to a demonstrator as well as 15 others were wounded as a result.
According to a statement issued at the same time by the Baghdad Operations Command, who is responsible for the security of Baghdad, the clashes also resulted in injuries to three officers as well as 19 security personnel.
Baghdad has been involved in mass anti-government protests since October 2019, in which demonstrators call on comprehensive reform, fight against corruption, better public services and more job opportunities.
