Iraq, Belgium agree to continue combating terrorism


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BAGHDAD, Feb 3 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammad Al-Hakim and his Belgian counterpart Philippe Goffin agreed Monday to continue cooperation between their own countries in the field of combating terrorism.
The two ministers discussed political and security developments at the local, regional and global levels, and stressed the importance of everyone respecting the sovereignty of Iraq and supporting its efforts to eliminate terrorism and reconstruction, according to a statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.
The two parties agreed on the significance of continuing cooperation in the field of combating terrorism and extremism and working to prevent the return of the so-called Islamic State (IS), it said.
They also tackled the developments of the Palestinian issue, as Al-Hakim expressed that any settlement must guarantee the full rights of the Palestinian people, it added.
Al-Hakim called on the European Union to work to guarantee the rights of the Palestinian people to establish a unified state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
The Belgian minister arrived in Iraq earlier today on an official visit, in which he will meet with senior Iraqi officials. (end)
