Afghanistan- US envoy discusses peace deal progresses with Afghan leaders


(MENAFN- Khaama Press) US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad met Afghan leaders including President Ghani, CEO Abdullah, Ex-President Hamid Karzai, and elders after discussing peace progresses with Pakistan officials.

Khalilzad arrived in Kabul on Saturday and briefed President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on the discussions and progresses made about the Afghan peace process.

A statement published by the presidential Office said the US envoy briefed Afghan President on discussion with the Taliban and his recent meeting with the Taliban officials.

'We are waiting for a clear answer from the Taliban about a ceasefire or lasting reduction in violence based on a working mechanism which is acceptable to the people of Afghanistan and the US government,' the Palace quoted Khalilzad.

No agreement has been made in discussions with the Taliban yet, Khalilzad said according to the statement published by the Palace.

Khalilzad also met the former President Hamid Karzai on Sunday wherein, Karzai urged for more seriousness and speeding up the US, Taliban talks to reach an agreement.

According to a statement by Karzai's office, Khalilzad is happy with the progress of the peace talks with the Taliban and he hopes the results are fruitful.

The US Embassy in Kabul announced the conclusion of Zalmay Khalilzad's trip to Kabul on Sunday evening.

"Ambassador Khalilzad continued his ongoing consultations with Government of National Unity leaders President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah on U.S. efforts to facilitate a political settlement to end the war. They also discussed recent efforts by the United States to negotiate a reduction of violence with the Taliban to pave the way for a U.S.-Taliban agreement, intra-Afghan negotiations, and a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in support of sustainable peace", US Embassy statement said.

Ambassador Khalilzad also consulted with a range of other Afghan leaders to hear their views. In all his meetings, Ambassador Khalilzad emphasized Afghans should continue to focus on bringing together the inclusive Islamic Republic negotiating team and preparing for Intra-Afghan Negotiations, the statement added.
