Qatar's Al Jassim to blow the whistle at title decider

Qatar's Abdulrahman Al Jassim, who dreams of officiating the final of the FIFA World Cup in his home country in three years time, will blow the whistle to signal the kick off the FIFA World Cup final at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha today.

Al Jassim, along with two other Qatari referees Taleb Al Marri and Saoud Almaqaleh will the main match officials for the final between European champions Liverpool and their South American counterparts Flamengo. Spanish Juan Munuera will be the VAR referee for the match.

Al Jassim has been a member of the FIFA board since 2013. He has already officiated in the 2017 U20 World Cup in South Korea and was named video assistant during the2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The 31-year-old made his World Cup debut when he officiated the Group E match between Serbia and Costa Rica in Samara, Russia as part of the VAR team which Serbia win by 1-0.

Al Jassim was selected as part of the 13 VAR officials for the 2018 World Cup and was the only AFC referee selected to the VAR group with three from CONMEBOL and nine from UEFA.

'Nothing is impossible in life and I am still working to achieve my goal. I want officiate in a World Cup match but now I am a Video Assistant Referee. My goal, however, is to be the referee at the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, Al Jassem had said.

Al Jassim compatriot Assitant Referee Al Marri also made his World Cup debut in Russia serving as an assistant referee in the Poland vs Senegal tmatch. He was among the 10 referees who were representing the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in the 32-team tournament. Iran, Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia each had two representatives in the list of 10 assistant referees. Other AFC assistant referees were from the Bahrain, the UAE and Japan.
